Badham is an artist based in South Essex, working in a variety of medium, processes and contexts. His project-based practice explores notions of the discarded in both objects, structures, places and histories, and how a form of site responsive re-imagining can take place. Through a series of observations, the overlooked can generate long term durational projects through a task driven, pragmatist mentality to create a new understanding of our relationship to space. Through artistic interventions and public activation, established societal categories such as ownership and intended use are challenged and transformed. PLOT/EDGELANDS (2018 to present) initially explored the rise and fall of the Basildon Plotlanders, a back the land, self-build, DIY community whom were displaced due to the area being designated as a new town in 1946 and the policies that followed. While tracing the history of the plotlands, it has revealed they endured forms of managed decline, denialism and corruption, which has informed two podcasts, research panels, sculpture, talks, lecterns, interventions. Over the last 2 years I have collaboratively been self-building cabins on land which has either been abandoned, disused, or land banked. What does it mean to do this today, when the policies which made the Plotlanders illegal are still upheld? MORNING (2014 to 2018) attempted to identify the correlation between a series of architectural space-race themed climbing frames, designed in the 1970s, situated in my birth town, with the area’s inclusion in the Basildon New Town experiment, and their simultaneous periods of change. After years of lobbying, the frames were painted, enabling them to glow in the dark at night. The project generated drawings, videos, posters, t-shirts, design of a site-specific play space, a road sign and a painterly intervention. Components of the project went on tour from Basildon to Southend, London and Cornwall, presenting a spare Glow in the Dark Moon Probe Sculpture and a publication housing an interview between curator warren harper and myself with a commissioned text by Design Historian Stephanie Sutton. I’M STAYING (2014 to 2021) was a large-scale text-based neon sculpture which travelled around the city of Bristol, moving quarterly via democratic vote for 2 and a half years. The locations were determined by the Bristol public, which informed meaning, therefore addressing the piece as both a statement of provocation and affirmation. A majority of locations suggested to host the neon sculpture were deemed as a place of local value by the surrounding community with some under threat to remain. The project created drawings, stamped Bristol currency, prints, video, installation, survey paintings, and t shirts. In 2018 I’M STAYING travelled to London for Sculpture in the City, where the discourse surrounding the work shifted from the hyper local in Bristol to Brexit. Badham and Jes Fernie Saturday 26th July Henry Moore Studios and Gardens On Saturday 26th July, the first screening of my artist video A Journey of The Spaces In-Between, took place on Saturday 26th July. The video is a counterpart to a recent artist-led walk I held on the summer solstice, stopping to discuss twelve locations across the site. Following the screening, I was joined by Jes Fernie for an in conversation exploring the themes of the video. Topics of discussion included perspectives on im/permanence, the role of public art, adaptable architecture, rights of way, what we can learn from animals as audiences and more. Jes Fernie is a writer, curator, lecturer and mentor to many sculptors, as well as the creator of Archive of Destruction, documenting emotive encounters and significant shifts in public sculpture. This short yet abundant 2-mile forest walk will take you via the meandering flow of the river Ching, through Hatch Forest and Whitehall Plain and onwards to the ancient trees of Barn Hoppit. The walk concludes at the Epping Forest Visitor Centre by the Queen Elizabeth Hunting Lodge in Chingford.‘Follow the Forest’ is a new project exploring the unique ecology, land rights and history of Epping Forest. The project draws inspiration from the organised protest and lobbying that led to the Epping Forest Act 1878, and the many residents, community groups and organisations that have succeeded in protecting the vitality of the forest environment ever since. The project draws inspiration from a historic walking path that traverses the green spaces of Waltham Forest, first established in 1978 to mark 100 years of the Epping Forest Act 1878. Concentrating on a small 2-mile stretch of the route from Highams Park to the Royal Hunting Lodge in Chingford, the walk passes the London-Essex boundary line, ancient woodlands and open spaces that were once the subject of organised protest and lobbying in a bid to protect them from enclosures and development of the land. With its protection now enshrined in law, the undulating forest is a rich ecosystem of wildlife and heritage that provides respite, meaning and exploration for residents and visitors alike. Comprising a series of free public guided-walks and associated audio-work taking place later this year, participants are invited to follow the forest to explore and observe the natural environment, registering the layering of social histories, governance and ecologies that converge along the way. ‘Follow the Forest’ emerges from an earlier project titled ‘Marking the Land’ (2023), which sought to explore the preservation of public rights of way along The Essex Way; an 81-mile long waymarked route from Epping Forest to Harwich, Essex. The route was first established by students from Chelmsford Technical College in 1972, but made accessible and popularised thanks to the voluntary work of the West Essex Ramblers. This same group has strong ties to Epping Forest, working alongside conservation and community groups to uphold the protection of the forest, and maintaining or promoting walking routes in the area. Conceived as a hyper-localised walking guide traversing a 4.5 mile circular section of The Essex Way, the project considers the radical nature of walking in enacting the permanence of public rights of way through our literal, physical trace in the landscape. With the reintroduction of a deadline under the Countryside Rights of Way Act 2000, the year 2031 will be the final opportunity to register forgotten paths, posing a threat to some 49,000 miles of routes and reinvigorating a new urgency to prevent the conclusive loss of public land and knowledge. Beginning at Fairstead and looping back through Terling, the route passes several historical sites including 14th century frescoes, folkloric puddingstones and a former Smock Mill. Beyond these landmarks or artefacts, the publication looks to the landscape for deeper meaning: from land speculators and the agricultural depression to early examples of activism to reinstate disused paths in Essex. To be enjoyed remotely or as you follow the path, the project was initially conceived as a guided walk in 2022 to mark the 50 year anniversary of the Essex Way. September 2022, St Mary the Virgin (St Mary and St Peter) Fairstead Hall Road Fairstead CM3 2AT To mark its 50-year anniversary, artists Shaun C Badham and James Ravinet present a free guided walk along a small section of The Essex Way; an 81-mile-long waymarked footpath from Epping to Harwich founded by Campaign for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) in 1972. The act of moving through the landscape is underpinned with complex histories and laws which identify it as a potentially radical act in the context of infringement of rights and the rising cost of land. Traversing public and private land, walking is often closely tied to leisure, however, historically many routes have been established for religion, commerce, as a form of protest or campaigning. The recent work of campaigners has seen the government cancel a deadline for registering forgotten paths under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act, validating the importance for public access to be maintained in the countryside. To this end, this project aims to celebrate the alternative exploration of the county in lesser known environments, expanding upon a network of walking routes that exemplify the diverse and various nature of the region. As we move through the land, we will observe linear/non-linear markings, land-use and history, offering reflections, as well as encouraging contributions from those with specific local knowledge. Contributors include: James Ravinet, Shaun C. Badham, David Boyle, Victor Roome, Susan Poole, Philippa Stewart and Peter Jepson. About the route: A 4.5 mile circular walk along the Essex Way from Fuller Street to Fairstead that includes several unique examples of architecture, history and artworks that exemplify how walking can help us to re-engage with our environment through a heightened awareness of the conditions around us. Beginning at Fairstead Parish Church, with its remarkable 13th century fresco paintings of the Passion Cycle, the walk traverses open countryside, farmland, wood, and hedgerows. The route also passes by the Essex Way information point at Fuller Street, with an opportunity for a break at the Square and Compass pub; a notable destination which includes an original hand-drawn map of the ‘Ley Lines of Essex’ by the author and artist Terry Johnson. The route will also take us past Terling Smock Mill before looping back through tranquil woodland to Fairstead. Observations, extracts and documentation from this guided walk will be incorporated into a new publication that will be available later this year. 50 Years of the Essex Way is supported by the Arts and Cultural Fund awarded by Essex County Council.
